June 12 Racing Club Update

As a few of you have mentioned, Great Bam did work out this morning. He went five furlongs in 1:03 and 1/5 which was ranked 8/8 at the distance.

Clay reported that he noticed a small quarter crack on one of Great Bam’s hooves after the conclusion of the workout. A quarter crack is a crack in the side wall of the hoof. When detected early is can usually be fixed relatively easily through the application of an acrylic patch.

For those that were in the group last year, Crown the Cat dealt with something similar and didn’t have any problems continuing to run throughout the summer. Clay plans on having the farrier come over in the morning to determine the best way to patch it up and, at this time, doesn’t believe it will impact his plans for Bam to race within the next week or so.

As of now, the plan is to get the new Condition Book when it comes out later this week and point Bam toward the next race he fits in. Hopefully, that means he’ll have a race within the next 7-10 days.

Where to Find Another Horse?

There have been a lot of inquires as to where to find the next horse. At this point, we are looking at claiming a horse out of the Claiming Series races. The claiming series is an opportunity for $3,500 claiming horses to run for a $25,000 purse in early August. The first one of these races takes place on Thursday night (Race 6).

  1. I hear “quater crack” and I can’t help but think of Big Brown. Hopefully Great Bam’s isn’t nearly as serious. I assume minor crack or not, that racing this weekend has been completely ruled out, correct?

    • Kaye – Don’t believe there are any races Clay would be considering this weekend anyway so probably don’t have to worry about that. Remember, Big Brown came back to win two races that same summer after sustaining his quarter crack (and dislodged shoe in the Belmont).

  2. Speaking of Crown the Cat, for those who were part of the 2011 Crown the Cat club, Crown the Cat is confirmed in foal to Matt’s Broken Vow. Her due date is 04/25/13. Crown the Cat and Matt both share Unbridled as a grand sire. She is back home now and enjoying racing her pasture mate a lap or two around their pasture. Kathy

  3. Jeff and Andrew I was just wondering about the new Claiming contest….would this create a huge “claiming” war among the owners and trainers trying to claim the horse with the most points in order to win? Also, what does it mean that Great Bam ranked 8/8 in his workout? He had the least fastest time of the other seven horses? Thanks, Kathy

    • It could create a claiming war; however, as the horse earns more points, it becomes more expensive to claim. Therefore, the thought is that as a horse earns more points, it may become less desirable if someone doesn’t want to spend more money… We’ll see how it plays out.

8/8 means that it was the slowest of 8 works.

  4. We have a new second horse, I believe, out of the 6th race tonight. It wasn’t the winner (who was claimed as well). The second place horse?
